Newlands
Girls’ School

KS4

Year 10 and Year 11

In accordance with GCSE specifications, students widen and deepen their linguistic knowledge in the following broad topic areas:

  • Identity and culture
  • Local, national, international and global areas of interest
  • Current and future study and employment

Regular assessments will take place throughout the course in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.   These will be based on the topics students have recently studied.   Students will learn how to convey information, explain ideas, give and justify opinions both orally and in writing, using some complex language. They will learn and develop independent learning skills which will enable them to plan, modify and evaluate their work effectively. They will become able to understand spoken and written language of increasing complexity.

GCSE students will have access to native speakers to practise their oral skills.  Our Foreign Language Assistants in French, German and Spanish will work with students to support them to develop their cultural awareness and to prepare them for the oral examination at the end of the course.  They will support students to produce extended answers and questions, to speak with reasonable spontaneity and also to be able to form questions to ask of the examiner.
