KS3
Year 7
In Year 7, all students study French, German and Spanish. In each language pupils learn how to speak and write about themselves, their family and pets, their school, their home, their leisure activities, their town and their holidays. They also understand others talking about these topics.
Year 8
In Year 8, students choose to continue with two languages.
In French, pupils learn how to speak and write about their family, hobbies, arranging to go out, food and drink and holidays. They also understand others talking about these topics.
In German, pupils learn how to speak and write about holidays, shopping, after school activities, healthy living and going out. They also understand others talking about these topics.
In Spanish, pupils learn how to speak and write about food and drink, shopping, clothes, going on holiday, illness and healthy living.
Grammar is further developed with a particular emphasis on both the past and future tense in all three languages. Students begin to practise translation, both into English and into the target language. They also begin to practice speaking with some spontaneity in the target language.
Year 9
As pupils grow more mature in their tastes and outlook, the topics covered begin to reflect this: modern media and entertainment, the environment, future career plans, the global world, homelessness, problems of young people.
Students develop their translation skills, both into English and into the target language. They also develop their speaking skills, including speaking with great spontaneity and forming questions in the target language.
In all 3 languages, the use of the present, past and future tense is consolidated and students and pupils learn how to formulate their ideas using some more complex structures in preparation for the GCSE course.
