Newlands
Girls’ School

Personal Development

Students’ experience at Newlands is far more than just the academic curriculum. Students have a carefully crafted Pastoral and PSHE programme that all students learn through their time at Newlands.

Students are given careers guidance and advice from Year 7. Our Careers Leader offers careers interviews to students at key points of their education and all students take part in world of work sessions during the year. We use the Unifrog platform to help broaden students' horizons and explore future careers and courses. Students take part in work experience in Year 10 and 12.

We typically have over 70 clubs running each week. Examples of clubs are Music tech, crochet, chess and board games, gym, Psychology society, The Rainbow Alliance, French cinema, Revive (PRE) Rock School, STEM society, swimming, Sign Language, Madrigal Choir and many more.

Annual shows include Concerts, School productions and the Gym and Dance show, in which over 350 students take part.

Students take advantage of a wide range of leadership opportunities, including sports, academic clubs and societies, performing arts, our LGBTQ+ group; the Rainbow Alliance, and the School Council and House systems. Departments have subject leaders and there are many opportunities for Sports Leaders to help at events lower down the school.

We have a thriving house system and all students and staff members belong to one of our six houses. Regular competitions are held, including the Spelling Bee, House Bake Off, House Band, House Quiz and, of course, Sports Day.

Students from Year 9 upwards are able to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award.
