Transition between Key Stages
Key Stage 2 - Key stage 3
Key Stage 2-3 Transition
We wish to ensure your child is ready to start their mathematical journey at Newlands and to provide you with an overview of the Mathematics education your child will receive at Newlands in Year 7.
Equipment
To enable your child to be fully equipped in their Mathematics lessons, we ask that they arrive at Newlands with the following mathematical equipment:
- Scientific Calculator (we recommend Casio Classwiz 991-EX) GCSE Calculators - Maths Calculators & Cases | CASIO
- Compass
- Protractor
- Ruler
- Pencil
Transition Time
Over the summer between Year 6 and Year 7, we recommend that your child keeps on working through and consolidating their Mathematics. The main ways of doing this are:
- Day-to-Day Maths in Real Life
- Maths Genie Maths Genie - Primary - KS2 SATs Revision
- Corbett Maths Primary Videos and Worksheets – Corbettmaths Primary
- CGP or Collins Maths Workbook
Maths Lessons and Homework
In Year 7, students have eight hours of Maths a fortnight; this is usually with either one or two teachers. Two pieces of homework a week are set by the teachers, each piece expected to take up to 20mins. These can be either written pieces, revision tasks or MyMaths work. It is important that your child completes their homework on time and, if absent, catches up on any class work that they miss.
Setting
When students arrive at Newlands they will be taught in their form groups except a small group of students who are identified as needing a bit of extra support with their transition. In January of Year 7 they will then be put into sets based mainly on the three tests they have completed in Maths at Newlands (two in Term 1 and one in Term 2); we also look at any KS2 data we have for them as well and their ability in class.

Congratulations on choosing A level Mathematics. You are going to have so much fun!
In September, you will complete an A Level Mathematics entrance test. The result of this test will provide a benchmark of where you currently stand academically in Mathematics.
In order to prepare for this test, you are required to complete all 23 of the transition worksheets at the bottom of this page over the summer. Please click on the links below to access each worksheet.
All students who have completed A level Mathematics over the past 13 years have done this exact entrance test.
Here is an overview of the courses we offer at Newlands;
AS/A Level Mathematics
Course Requirements
- You will require a Grade 7 at GCSE to be considered for this course
- Complete the bridging work over the summer
- Pass the baseline test in the first 2 weeks of the term
Brief introduction to the course:
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Mathematics consists of 3 externally-examined papers. Students must complete all assessments in May/June in any single year.
All exams are 2 hours in length, calculators can be used in all papers.
Paper 1 Pure Mathematics
